About

A victorious soldier returns from battle and builds Alma a brewery and public house in honour of his successful feat in Crimea in 1854. Alma, once dominant over the Spitalfields skyline, brewing ale and sharing stories in desperate times of slums and famine. Disparate communities came and went. Ripper stories were told and titillating barmaids offered more than just the breweries produce..

But in her 163 years of her existence, what has become of the slums upon which her bricks were first laid?

Fruit and veg is no longer sold at Spitalfields, silk weavers are no longer housed on brick lane. The area has become a haven for creative arts and some of the most futuristic technologies in existence. Will it continue to be a bastion of creativity and technology, or is the future of the area changing and losing its creative soul?

For many years Alma has no longer served beer but for one final weekend she will be calling last orders and inviting you into her inner core and giving you one last glimpse of this monolithic time capsule before she is turned to dust and rubble.

We are Alma will breathe life into the senses, Alma’s history will be retold, her beer will be re-drunk and the very fabric of East London creative culture will be showcased.

The Beer

Once the original beer labels were discovered by chance at the labologist’s archive’s Oliver Wayman teamed up with master brewer Nick Zivcovic to recreate the exact replica beer that would have been drunk from the Alma brewery in 1854, this includes matching the precise yeast strain and water content from the period.
